New DC7X Extended Scale 7-String Guitar

Carvin DC7X Extended Scale 7-String GuitarDue to overwhelming requests from our customers, Carvin is pleased to announce the new DC7X extended-scale 7-string guitar. The Custom Shop has taken the extended baritone scale of the popular DC800 eight-string model, and combined that with the sleek features of the DC700, to create an entirely new instrument that satisfies the playability of an ERG with the lower range of a seven-string.

Neck-through design, an alder body with Eastern hard rock maple neck and Hipshot™ bridge provide unsurpassed playability and sustain for days. Like all Carvin Custom Shop instruments, you can choose from a massive assortment of finishes; premium neck, body, fingerboard and top woods; inlays; fretwire and much, much more. Carvin's innovative "M" Bridge or a Floyd Rose tremolo can also be selected.  The DC7X comes equipped with Carvin’s direct-mount A70N & A70B pickups, with industry-standard size pickup routing for easy swapping. Controls consist of a master volume and passive tone control with a 3-way lever-style pickup selector. The DC7X has superior tone definition because our active electronics are built on a full size circuit board utilizing full size components which allow us to achieve superior tone and lower signal to noise ratio. This breakthrough in active electronics technology eliminates the thin, over-compressed sound generally associated with actives. Additionally, for fans of passive tone, you may also order a pair of Carvin’s Classic D26 humbuckers with passive electronics.

The Custom Shop can build your new DC7X exactly the way you want it, creating a 7-string masterpiece that will blow you, your bandmates and your audience away. Whether you’re an experienced 7-string player, or looking to take your sound and performance to a new level, Carvin’s DC7X is the ideal axe to get you there.

Fleetwood Mac’s John McVie Adds the AC40 Bass

John McVieCarvin recently built a custom AC40 acoustic-electric bass for renowned bassist John McVie of Fleetwood Mac. John visited Carvin’s Hollywood showroom looking for a new A/E bass, and was impressed with tone and playability of the AC40, so the Custom Shop made one for him to his specs. He was nice enough to invite several Carvin staffers to Sony Studios in LA where Fleetwood Mac was rehearsing for their upcoming North American tour to deliver his new instrument. John stated that he loved the “playability of the bass”, the “great feel of the neck”, and appreciated that the AC40 has “a lot of headroom”. He summed it up in two words: “Wow!”, and “Wow!”. John’s AC40 will now be part of John’s rig for the current tour, and Carvin is very proud to be associated with a bassist of John’s stature and skill. Visit for tour dates and other Fleetwood Mac info.

Vintage Guitar Magazine AE185-12 Review

August 2013 Vintage Guitar Magazine AE185-12 ReviewCheck out the AE185-12 acoustic electric 12-string guitar review in the August 2013 issue of Vintage Guitar magazine. VG says: “Sound-wise, the AE185-12 offers myriad tones, from shimmering electric to fairly realistic acoustic. From the Beatles to the Byrds to ‘Stairway to Heaven’ and any number of tracks from Yes, Genesis, or R.E.M., the AE185-12 can be mined for a world of 12-string textures.” They go on to say: “Certainly, George Harrison’s Rickenbacker 360/12 and Jimmy Page’s Gibson EDS-1275 were incredible instruments, but it’s quite likely that George and Jimmy would have drooled over the AE185-12. It’s a terrific reinvention of the 12-string guitar and one that will appeal to electric and acoustic enthusiasts equally.”

Check out the Carvin AE185-12 12-String Acoustic Electric Guitar for yourself. You can choose from hundreds of Custom Shop options to design your AE185-12 exactly the way you want it. And, of course, it’s made in the USA!

Happy Birthday, Jason Becker!

Happy Birthday Jason Becker

Jason Becker celebrated his 43rd birthday this past Sunday in his hometown of Richmond, California with family, friends and fans. Guitar Player magazine, Carvin staffers and local press were also in attendance. The celebration included two screenings of the award-winning documentary movie Jason Becker – Not Dead Yet. Both afternoon and evening screenings were sold to the venue’s capacity, with some people seated on the floor in the theater. After each screening Jason made himself available for Q & A. He graciously answered any and all questions – sometimes with fun sarcasm, displaying his wonderful personality and sense of humor. When asked “what new shred guitarists do you like?”, Jason jokingly answered “they all suck” but then gave credit to guitarists such as Guthrie Govan and Jeff Loomis.  Despite his ongoing battle with ALS, Jason was upbeat and happy as he shared his birthday with his guests.

Happy Birthday Jason BeckerJason brought along some guitars from his collection to display on the theater stage. Many fans drooled over his late 80’s era Carvin guitars as well as his new JB200C Tribute model. For his birthday, Carvin presented Jason with a JB200C made in the color scheme of his favorite NFL team, the San Francisco 49ers. The guitar body was painted in Metallic Candy Red and sported white pickups with black bezels and gold hardware. Of all the guitars on display, the crowd voted on which was the coolest by applauding. The loudest applause was for Jason’s newest Metallic Candy Red guitar.

In response to customer's requests, and due to the popularity of Jason's new Candy Red model, Carvin will now be offering the JB200SC Standard, which enables players and fans to order Jason’s Tribute Model without a Flame Maple top, allowing for solid and translucent colors from Carvin’s Custom Shop. Like the JB200C, a Floyd Rose tremolo with locking nut, flamed maple fingerboard with abalone dot inlays, pointed inline headstock, tung-oiled neck and active electronics are standard features.  Chrome hardware is standard, and a wide assortment of standard solid finishes, optional translucent finishes and other options are available.

New Carvin JB200C Jason Becker Tribute Guitar

Carvin JB200C Jason Becker Tribute Guitar

Carvin’s relationship with Jason Becker dates back to the late 1980s, and we’re excited to welcome this influential and inspirational guitarist back to the Carvin family.

In response to Jason’s legions of worldwide fans, we are proud to introduce the JB200C Jason Becker Tribute Guitar. The Custom Shop worked closely with Jason to replicate as closely as possible the Carvin DC200 that was one of his main instruments in the 80s and 90s. This new model is loaded with standard features, including a 4A flamed maple top and matching pointed inline headstock, original Floyd Rose tremolo with locking nut, flamed maple fingerboard with abalone dot inlays, tung-oiled hardrock maple neck, black hardware, M22SD & M22V pickups and active electronics. Jason’s original guitar was finished in Sapphire Blue, but you can choose from any of Carvin’s translucent flamed maple finishes, or upgrade your top wood to 4A quilted maple. You can also upgrade to Carvin’s Deep Triple Step finish, which adds an almost 3-dimensional depth to the figure of the wood. A signature Jason Becker truss rod cover adorns the headstock.

Jason continues to impact the music world, as well as inspire guitarists of all genres. A new documentary film, Jason Becker: Not Dead Yet, explores his rise as one of the most influential neo-classical metal guitarists of his time, and his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. Everyone at Carvin is very excited to be working with Jason again as he continues to inspire a new generation of guitarists.
